A Friday Post: The Guest List, by Lucy Foley

Hello friends!

It’s Friday, which can only mean one thing – some snippets from my current read!

BB.Button

Every Friday Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Gillion at Rose City Reader where you can share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

I’m currently reading The Guest List, by Lucy Foley.

NOW

The Wedding Night

The lights go out.

In an instant, everything is in darkness. The band stop their playing. Inside the marquee the guests squeal and clutch at one another. The light from the candles on the tables only adds to the confusion, sends shadows racing up the canvas walls.

Also every Friday there is The Friday 56, hosted by Freda at Freda’s Voice.

30879-friday2b56These are the rules:

  • Grab a book, any book.
  • Turn to page 56, or 56% on your eReader. If you have to improvise, that is okay.
  • Find any sentence (or a few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
  • Post it.
  • Add the URL to your post in the link on Freda’s most recent Friday 56 post.

Cheating a bit this week – this is actually from page 52.

HANNAH

The Plus One

By the time we reach the stiller waters of the island’s inlet I’ve been sick three times and I’m soaked and cold to the bone, feeling as wrung-out as an old dish cloth and clinging to Charlie like he’s a human life raft. I’m not sure how I’m going to walk off the boat as my legs feel like they’ve got no bones left.

Book synopsis:

Set on a remote island off the Irish coast, this is one guest list no one would want to be on, just as no one would have wanted an invitation to the New Year’s Eve party in Foley’s previous novel, The Hunting Party. Lives unravel amid the revelry on an eerie and remote island as family and friends assemble for a glam wedding in an updated Murder on the Orient Express. Each of the principal characters has a reason to want one of their number dead, there are old secrets, and one of them is murdered.

I’m really enjoying this, and should finish it later today. Would you keep reading?
